These are very small details from the latest surface design pattern I’m working on. It’s the first in a series about microscopic images that I’m hoping to develop further. More on this later, when I’ve decided which colorways to use (probably all of them!)
Who doesn’t remember their first touch of gray? I was 26, on a bathroom break at work, when I saw mine. I told my salt and pepper haired boss, who groaned theatrically and said “It’s all downhill from there.”
Surface pattern design is one of my favorite branches of illustration. Above is a simplified example of how I create a repeating pattern. I always start out by sketching- these skulls were a warmup study. I did not intend to create a pattern from them at first, but they looked like they might work well that way.
